Literacy Learning Centres – Rainforest’s and Farming:

Clearance of the Amazon region’s forest for pasture by cattle ranchers has enabled Brazil to become the world’s largest exporter of beef. Farmland is currently worth more than the forest but is there a way to place a higher value on the rainforest? There is money to be made in the trees – it’s just a matter of perspective.

Learning Intention: Students will be able to understand the various ways humans have used and affected the environment.

  1. 1. Do you think it is ok to destroy the rainforest to make money from the cattle, why / why not?
I think it is not ok to destroy the rainforests to make money from the cattle because the people who are doing it only care about the money. It is not fair at all towards the cattle and it destroys beautiful rainforests.

    2. What do you think makes the farms more ‘eco-friendly’? Use evidence and example to support your response.
    ??????

    3. Why do farmers get a better price for their beef, if their farms are eco-friendly?
    ?????

    4. Why is a European bank becoming involved with a farm in Brazil?
Maybe they are helping because they want everything to go well in the farm with no crisis’ or disasters.

    5. Research the term ‘Carbon-Credit’ and explain your own understanding.
I am not quite sure what carbon credit means but I think it is where you take credit for something.

  2. – Define what unrestricted farm development means?
I think it might mean a farm that was made without asking anyone.

    – What is a cattle ranch, and why would that causes destruction?
Maybe cattle ranch means there is not enough cattle left so we are running out of it.

    – Research the size of the UK in square meters, how large is the rainforest destruction?
The size of the UK in square meters is 242,900 km² and the rainforest destruction is 230,000 square miles.

    – What does it mean to export something?
It means to send to another countries to make money and sell products.

    – What other products is Brazil known for exporting?
There are lots! coffee, sugar, Brazilian nuts, transportation equipment, iron ore, steel, soybeans, footwear, motor vehicles, concentrated orange juice, beef, and tropical hardwoods. Machinery, electrical and transportation equipment, chemical products, oil, and electronics are major imports.

  3. – Do you think it is ok to destroy the rainforest to make money from the cattle, why / why not?

I do not think it’s good to destroy the rainforests because they are part of the reason that we are alive. If you think about it from the other side though, if we do stop that business; people will lose jobs. It would be even worse though to destroy the rainforests because animals and insects habitats will be ruined.

    – Why do farmers get a better price for their beef, if their farms are eco-friendly?
Farmers get a better price for their meat, if it’s eco-friendly because their archers are more eco-friendly, but it is also because the trees themselves also help the farmer earn money.

    – Why is a European bank becoming involved with a farm in Brazil?
A European bank is involved with a Brazil farm because the Europeans are paying farmers to rebuild forests, which will resell the ‘Carbon- Credit’.

    – Research the term ‘Carbon-Credit’ and explain your own understanding: The word ‘Carbon- Credit’ means, in my understanding: something that allows a country or a company to make a certain amount of carbon which can be traded.

    – There are two points of view that are evident in this story, the environmentalists and the farmers. Choose one perspective and explain their point of view/ argument. I choose the environmentalists view because they are against the cattle being made and the destruction of rainforests.
