Ever have trouble selecting a book to read? Well here’s a chance to share your ideas and see the ideas of others.

 

Learning intention: Students will deepen their understanding of how authors often innovate on text structures and play with language features to achieve particular aesthetic, humorous and persuasive purposes and effects

 

Task

  1. Write a profile of one of your favourite authors. You will find information on the covers or inside their books. Another great source of information is the Internet.

Include: Name, Date of Birth, Publishers, Book Titles and any other interesting information.

  1. What type of books does this author write? Explain why it is that particular type of book.
  2. What techniques does the author use to captivate the reader? Give an example of this used in the text.
  3. What titles of the books have you read. Which is your favourite

book by this author? Why?

    Enid Blyton was an English children’s writer whose books have been among the world’s bestsellers since the 1930s, selling more than 600 million copies. Blyton’s books are still enormously popular, and have been translated into almost 90 languages; her first book, Child Whispers, a 24-page collection of poems, was published in 1922. She wrote on a wide range of topics including education, natural history, fantasy, mystery stories and biblical narratives, but is best remembered today for her Noddy, Famous Five, and Secret Seven series.

    I have read the walking dead it’s my favourite because it’s got a good story behind it.
    What captives the reader is that he leaves you on a cliff hanger.
    The particular thing I like about his work is that he uses strong words.
    The question I would ask him is ‘was creating the walking dead difficult or was it easier than you thought?’

    Derek Landy writes many action packed and mystery books. That is what I like about his books.
    I have read the skulduggery pleasant series and it has been my top one favourite so far. If I had to choose my favourite book in the skulduggery pleasant series it would have to be the dying of light which is the last book of the series. I thought it was way more action packed and lots of mystery than the previous books in the skulduggery pleasant series.
    He uses lots of interesting words and intrigues me into the story like I’m in the story. This is what I like about Derek Landy.
    If I could meet Derek Landy I would ask how he thought of these ideas and makes his story so intriguing, and maybe what else he may write in the future so I would be ready.

    1) This author’s most famous series-Harry Potter, is about a child who has been cursed by an unforgivable curse, but survived it. Every book has been made into a movie, and it is an intriguing witch and wizardry series.
    2) The author writes so deeply, that everything is easy to visualise. An example of this is,” He was as white as the clouds above, slit nostrils and snake-looking eyes.”
    3) I have read every Harry Potter book and really enjoyed them. I haven’t read any of her other books, though.

    Rick Riordan writes fantasy and mythology books. He wrote this book because he finds them interesting and enjoyable. To captivate readers, Rick Riordan uses different genre like action, adventure, romance and comedy and makes fun and exciting characters like Percy Jackson and Leo Valdes. I have read the Heroes of Olympus Series and the Percy Jackson Series. My favourite series is Heroes of Olympus series and my favourite in that is the Lost Hero. I like his work because he connects to all ages and there is never a blank part. If I could ask Rick Riordan a question, I would ask “What kept you going?”

    Suzanne Collins is an author and is one of my favourite. She writes the book that I am currently reading: Catching fire, and has written the rest of the series: The hunger games and mocking jay. Her books are really well detailed. She explains each moment and makes you feel like you are in the book living that moment. I have read her book the hunger games and am reading catching fire but I am yet to read the last book in the series, mocking jay. If I could meet her I would ask her: when and why did you start writing books?

    Techniques: Fantastic drawing skills and great humour.
    Titles of books I have read: I have read all the diary of a wimpy kid series but my favourite one would have to be book #8 Diary of a Wimpy kid Hard Luck.
    What I particularly like about Jeff Kinney’s work is his amusing humour and how he can make someone of any age laugh.
    I would ask Jeff Kinney these questions:

    2. How do put a lot of humour into a book.
    3. Where did you get your drawing skills from.
